Charles “Charlie” Hawkins Jr., 87, of Delaware, Ohio, died peacefully Monday evening, March 27, 2017 in Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Charles was born February 28, 1930 in Columbus, and was the son of the late Charles R. and Olive (Bull) Hawkins. Charles served his country in Germany while in the US Army, receiving an honorable discharge on Dec. 16, 1953. He was a long-time resident of Loudonville until moving to Delaware in 1974 to finish his 35-year career with the Flxible Company. He commuted for two years so his daughter could graduate without changing high schools. Charles learned the auto upholstery trade from his father and took over that business for many years in addition to his position at the Flxible. He also enjoyed carpentry work and built much of his home for his family in Loudonville. Charles and Nancy took their young family on many summer vacations, loved picnics at Pleasant Hill Lake, and seasonal camping at Wally Campground.
Charles is survived by his wife, Nancy Irene (Saunier) Hawkins, whom he married August 1, 1959; one daughter, Betty (Haudenschild) Welsh (David Poston) of Rushville, OH; one son, Robert S. Hawkins of Delaware; one grandson, Donavan J. (Sherri) Hawkins Jr. of Newark; three great-grandchildren: Nolan, Mila, and Cora Hawkins; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Beverly) Saunier of Wooster. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sisters: Velmer Kopp and Thelma Hoskins; and a son, Donavan J. Hawkins.
Charles requested no visitation or services. He donated his body to Ohio State University for research in hopes of better Alzheimer’s treatment options in the future. The Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville is assisting the family.
