Martha Eileen Wachtel, 97, of Pittsburgh died Friday evening, November 30, 2018 at her home following a short illness. She relocated to Pittsburgh from Loudonville in 2010 to be closer to her daughter and family but is coming home to join her late husband, Reno Carl “Tuney” Wachtel. Martha was born Feb. 20, 1921 in Loudonville and was the daughter of the late Curtis Walter and Eunice Delilah (Stout) Arnholt. She was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Loudonville where she was baptized, confirmed and married the love of her life, Tuney Wachtel, on June 14, 1947.
Martha served on the Church Fellowship Committee, was a Circle 1 member, and was a church greeter. In addition to her church activism, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Hospice, and was a Girl Scout Brownie Leader. Martha also served on the Election Board and until her death was a member of S.O.A.R. (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees). Martha’s working career included the A.R. Garber Co. in Ashland, the U.S. Postal Service in Lakeville, and 22 ˝ years with the Flxible Co. in Loudonville. Her interests included sewing, crocheting, reading, flower gardening, baking, crossword puzzles (she actually created her own hand-written crossword puzzle dictionary over many years), playing pinochle, fishing with her late husband, computer games, bingo, no one could beat her at Wii Bowling, and loved spending time with family, friends, and especially all her great-grandchildren.
Martha is survived by her daughter: Ann Flener-Gittlen and son-in-law, Ike Gittlen of Pittsburgh, PA; granddaughter: Jodi Flener of Pittsburgh; step-grandchildren: Lauren (Miguel) Lebron-Tirado of Harrisburg, PA and Grant (Katie) Gittlen of Pittsburgh, PA; great grandchildren Brayden Graber, Coral Flener, Keira Flener, Bianca Lebron-Tirado, Aiden McFadden, Max Gittlen, and Astraea Craighead; a sister-in-law: Grace Arnholt; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Richard, Raymond, and Roy Arnholt, her sister: Mabel Rohrbaugh, and a grandson: James “Jamie” Flener III.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 7 at 11:00 AM in LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE with Rev. Virginia Pflueger officiating. Burial will be in Loudonville Cemetery and a light luncheon will be served at Zion Lutheran Church immediately following the interment. Friends may call in the funeral home from 9:30 until 11:00 Friday morning before the services begin.
