Location: Loudonville Cemetery
Elizabeth Ann Sprang Marxen, 81, passed away on December 6, 2018, in Cleveland, Ohio, following a brief illness. Born in Cleveland on October 7, 1937, Elizabeth, known as “Liz,” was a proud alumna of Oliver Hazard Perry Grade and Middle School, Collinwood High School, and Wittenberg College, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Tau Gamma Chapter.
Liz started as a kindergarten teacher in 1959 and substituted in the Brunswick City Schools from 1970 until she retired in 2002. She took her work home with her, made sure each of her seven children finished every scrap of homework, and tutored many neighborhood children at her kitchen table.
In retirement, having inherited a passion for genealogy from her father, Liz discovered the wonders of a database, amassing over 35,000 records in her family tree, which she eagerly shared online.
Plagued by arthritis in her later years, her avid knitting days seemingly far behind her, she was asked a month ago who could repair damage to a large afghan she had made long ago. She determined that several inches needed to be ripped out and redone, and said confidently, “I can fix that.” Stopping after each row to rest her hands, she pressed on, and completed the repair just a few days before she fell ill.
Her deepest pride and greatest joy were her grandchildren who basked in her expansive love and endless patience. The only competition they had for her affection were her cats, particularly the late Sebastian.
She was preceded in death by parents, Gailord and Hilda Sprang; infant sister, Catherine; former husband Paul Marxen; brother-in-law R. Mitchell Greenawalt; and beloved grandson Matthew Medley.
She is survived by seven children and eleven grandchildren: Sandra E. Marxen of Arlington, Mass., Charles K. Marxen of Seven Hills, his former wife Cindi Marxen, and Zachary, Jace, and Riley; Douglas P. Marxen of Cleveland, his wife Patricia, and Meghan, Samuel, Edward, and Joseph; Sara C. Marxen of Strongsville, and her former husband Jack Medley; Jeffrey A. Marxen of Medina; Victoria M. Dirkes of Orlando, Florida, her husband Carl, and Caitlin; Martin F. Marxen of Brunswick, his wife Kelly, and Dakota, Cameron, and Madison. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia S. Greenawalt of Copley; her nieces Gail G. Knarr, Beth G. Johnson, Susan G. Mason; nephew Ross M. Greenawalt; great nieces Rachel Knarr and Erin Johnson; and great nephew Adam Johnson.
A private burial was held Tuesday, December 11, at Loudonville Cemetery. The officiating pastor was the Reverend Scott Henderson of Zion Lutheran Church. As she rarely went anywhere without her camera, she was buried with it, its SD card filled with photos of her well-lived life, and a flash drive with a copy of her database. A gathering in Brunswick in the future is being planned. In lieu of flowers, Liz insisted donations be made to the charity of your choice; the family suggest Kitten Krazy, 930 Lafayette Road, Unit A, Medina, Ohio 44256 (kittenkrazy.org). The LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE is honored to be assisting the family.
